Darkmatter w/ Trans South Asian Performance Art Duo @ Public House

  • Riverwest Public House Cooperative 815 East Locust Street Milwaukee, WI, 53212 United States (map)

Darkmatter will be coming to the Riverwest Public House Cooperative on Friday, November 20th.

DARKMATTER is a trans South Asian performance art duo comprised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian.

Known for their quirky aesthetic and political panache, DarkMatter has been invited to perform at stages and universities across the world.

The duo cite a lack of representation of South Asian poets, especially queer and/or trans South Asian poets, as an impetus for their decision to form DarkMatter and tour independently starting in Spring 2013. Much of their poetry and activism is inspired by the lack of visibility for QTPOC (queer/trans people of color).

They see their performance as inherently political. One main topic that they seek to challenge is the concept of "homonationalism" and the violence and oppression done to people of color under the guise of queer activism that predominantly benefits white queers.

Their performance will be in conjunction with "November Neverland", featuring performances by local drag kings and queens.

November 20th is also Transgender Day of Remembrance. We will be sharing a moment of silence to honor the memory of those whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

**Entry is free with a donation of new or gently used clothing for homeless LGBTQ youth in Milwaukee. $5 cover otherwise.
